Skin Conditions...Alopecia
Alopecia, also known as hair loss, is a common complaint seen by
dermatologists. Alopecia has many different forms and causes. Some
of these causes include improper hair product use, improper hair
care, hereditary thinning or balding, childbirth, severe illnesses,
metabolic imbalances, medication, fungal infections, and some medical
treatments. Hair regrows spontaneously in some forms of alopecia,
but for some forms of alopecia, there is no cure for at this time.
Evaluation and history are the most important factors in determining
the chances of regrowth, as well as the methods of treatment to
best increase those chances.
Note: The skin disorder descriptions were compiled
by John Campbell, APRN using AAD pamphlets and "Clinical Dermatology.
Thomas B. Habif, MD" as a reference. Descriptions were reviewed
by: Brad Graham, MD; William Grabski, MD
