The laser that we currently use for tattoo removal is the Palomar Q-YAG laser. The laser works by focusing the light at the most common depth for commercial tattoos and causing the tattoo ink to be broken up. The likeness would be of a jackhammer and concrete. The best colors to have removed are black and dark blues. Other colors can be removed, but do take more treatments. Greens and light blues are the most difficult to get to respond. People compare the laser treatment to a feeling very similar to the tattooing process. Local anesthesia is sometimes used for more sensitive areas. The number of treatments vary from individual to individual, but average 6 to 12 treatment. Treatments are done at 6 to 8 week intervals.
