Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy and laser therapy are two ways that spider veins can be treated effectively. Larger veins called varicose veins may be raised above the surface. Large varicose veins are typically not treated with sclerotherapy. Sclerotherapy has been used since the 1930´s on spider veins, and before that on larger veins.

The solution, called sclerosing solution, is injected into the spider veins. It caused the lining of the vessel to swell, stick together, and the blood to thicken. Over a period of days and weeks, the vessel turns to scar tissue, which then fades and becomes barely visible. The number of injects required for this to happen is largely determined by the size of vessel. A single larger vessel may require multiple injections over the course of weeks or months. Most patients see a 50 to 90 percent improvement, with the veins fading over the course of months.

Because sclerotherapy is usually considered a cosmetic procedure, insurance will not usually cover the cost. If you are planning on filing on insurance, be sure to check with your insurance company to see if a second opinion, laboratory results, or photographs are required to demonstrate "medical necessity".

Even with a highly experience physician performing the treatment there are still some possible side effects. These include stinging or pain at the injection sites, swelling of the ankles or feet, or muscle cramps. These effects usually go away within 10 to 15 minutes of injection. At times, red, raised areas appear at the site of injection, but usually fade within a day or so. Other skin problems may occur, with most resolving themselves over time, or with additional sclerotherapy treatments. A small percent of patients are allergic to the sclerosing solution. However, any allergic reactions can be treated by your dermatologist.

Between treatments, many physicians recommend support or compression hose. Over the course of visits, most patients see remarkable, long-lasting results, with minimal side effects.
