Acne lesions may occasionally need to be physically removed because they are at risk of causing an acne scar, or they are in a particularly unsightly location.
Comedone extraction requires the delicate use of a scalpel or needle to remove the layer of skin that encloses a blackhead or whitehead. Then, if necessary, a comedone extractor is used to removed the sebum. This procedure lasts just a moment and is only mildly uncomfortable.
Incision and drainage may be required for cases of severe acne in order to treat deep acne lesions that have developed into cysts. Again, a scalpel is used to incise (open) the acne cyst and remove the trapped fluid to help speed recovery.
The injection of a corticosteroid (triamcinolone) may be recommended to shrink pimples or deep cysts. Acne cysts usually shrink after 12 hours to 3 days after the injection.
Acne is less likely to cause scarring if it is treated sooner than later.
